Komen Scholar: Dr. Lisa Newman
Dr. Newman is a surgical oncologist, Chief of the Division of Breast Surgery & Director of the Interdisciplinary Breast Disease Program for Weill Cornell Medicine-New York Presbyterian Hospital Network. She also supervises the Breast Surgical Oncology Program & is the founding Medical Director for the International Center for the Study of Breast Cancer Subtypes, now part of Weill Cornel Medicine and New York-Presbyterian. She is creating a new research field of anthropologic oncology, defining the root causes of breast tumor progression based on the study of population migration patterns and reproductive history. With Komen funding, Dr. Newman is studying Triple-Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) subtypes in diverse populations. This work will establish a unique resource of gene expression profiles of TNBC patients with African ancestry.
