Community Breast Health Navigator
Beginning in 2018, Susan G. Komen Florida launched a first-of-its-kind in the nation Community Breast Health Navigator Pilot Program for the global Susan G. Komen organization. The program addresses social and cultural barriers that prevent women from accessing preventative care or completing physician ordered care. It does this by reducing barriers through a community navigator that engages faith-based, health and nonprofit organizations that have available resources to address transportation, nutrition, free or reduce cost care to name a few. The program engages the community by building a coalition around the issue and building trusted relationships with community members who will seek the support of the navigator.
Breast health navigation empowers people with information and resources necessary to make informed decisions. Our program connects women with community health workers who help them through the health care system, ensuring timely diagnosis and follow-up while providing access to local resources that support the patients’ individual needs. Komen research has shown an improvement in 5-year survival rates of women with breast cancer who were supported by navigation.
