Palm Beach Post–Victory to the young at Komen Race for the Cure as 11-year-old wins women’s race, 17-year-old claims men’s

WEST PALM BEACH—On her fourth try Saturday and in the 55th competition of her life, Emma Cavendish won the women’s competition at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Decked out in baby blue, pink, gold and black, the Jupiter resident strode across the finish line with a time of 18 minutes, 40 seconds, besting hundreds of other participants.

Oh, and she’s 11 years old.

“I tried to go as fast as I could,” Cavendish, a sixth-grader at Independence Middle School in Jupiter, humbly said after finishing.

Others were more effusive in assessing her performance in the 5K race along the Intracoastal Waterway.

“She’s my girl!” a friend of the family said as she came up to Cavendish, took her head in her hands and smooched her on the cheek.
