Florida Weekly–Susan G. Komen South Florida awards nearly $800,000 in grants
August 1, 2013
Susan G. Komen South Florida will distribute more than $797,000 in grants to provide breast cancer screening, treatment and education. More than twothirds of the money will be awarded to non-profit healthcare providers to fund breast cancer treatment and breast cancer screening, like mammograms for uninsured and underinsured women, the Komen affiliate said in a press release.
The remainder will be awarded to nonprofits providing breast health education and patient navigation assistance to women diagnosed with breast cancer.
The affiliate received 38 percent less in donations compared to last fiscal year, the statement said, so fewer people will be helped. The national organization’s affiliates have reported varying losses following a controversy involving Planned Parenthood.
